Summer Venture to Full-Time Employment
On May 1 2011, two young, ambitious sisters saw an interesting opportunity and decided to start their own business. Although, it may not be what you expect.
At the ages of 16 and 18, Naushin and Shaista Jaffer began their very own worm-selling business based out of their backyard. They identified a unique need for fish bait in their hometown of Cassleman, a village about 55 kilometres southeast of downtown Ottawa, and decided to jump into this untapped market.
After realizing their strengths in business, a year later the Jaffer sisters decided to try something a little different. Naushin, Shaista and their mom Shelina began cooking for the Ottawa Jamat, including university students, offering traditional Indian cuisine at a low price.
Word quickly spread and in a short time their food was in high demand. With support from the Ottawa Jamat and their family, Naushin and Shaista combined their passion for cooking and business to form All Seasons Indian Catering.
In 2011, they received the Summer Company grant from the Ontario government for $3,000 and over the next couple years the business grew considerably. Naushin and Shaista attribute much of their growth to recommendations from the Ottawa Jamat.
“The Ismaili community really helped to spread the word,” said Shaista. “Especially being a part of such a wide variety of professional fields, the Ottawa Jamat allowed us to access so many different customers.”
All Seasons has catered events from government business luncheons to wedding receptions to university formals and of course, they continue to cater to their Jamat.
With all the success they’ve had over the last few years, increased business and a much larger and more diverse client base, the natural progression for All Seasons Catering was to open a storefront.
The Jaffers hope that this will increase accessibility and convenience for new and current customers. The store is scheduled to open in April of this year in Ottawa, at St. Laurent and Walkely, just minutes away from the Ottawa Jamatkhana.
While preparing for the opening of the storefront and still running a successful business, Naushin and Shaista continue to remain at the top of their classes and perform seva regularly for their Jamat.
Both sisters have received multiple awards for their outstanding performance in academia and community service, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubliee Award, student of the year awards and iStar awards.
“Although we’re very proud of these achievements, customer satisfaction is ultimately the best reward,” said Naushin. “An important lesson we’ve learned is that if you love something, you should just go for it.”
Even if it’s as simple as selling worms out of your backyard.
